Meta hints that its next major new hardware release

The Immersive Wire - 8 April 2024 (Monday Briefing)

Executive summary

Welcome to your weekly briefing on the metaverse and spatial computing. Here are your snippets to sound smarter in meetings this week:

  • Headline: Meta dropped hints on the first-ever pair of AR glasses (analysis below)

  • Stat of the week: Most Britons who have worn VR headsets think they look uncool, according to a poll from YouGov (analysis below)

  • Candidates board: Three new additions to professionals looking for work.

  • Based in the UK? Help investigate safe spaces in social VR by completing this quick survey (it only takes 30 seconds and it’s for a good cause!)

  • Other stories: Apple made its Personas feature more collaborative, and Real VR Fishing reached over 1m users (more stories below)

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a mathaton with a trip at the end. It is also incredibly anime, with a protagonist that has hair so spiky that it could deter pidgeons in Paddington. But the journey made it worth it 👍

Analysis

Meta dropped hints on the first-ever pair of AR glasses

  • What do we know? In its blog post on its history, it references that the company is at work on the specs. It will apparently bring together the worlds of the Meta Quest 3 and its Ray-Ban series into a cohesive package.

  • When may it come out? The earliest iteration may be 2025, according to a report from The Verge. But we will have to see.

  • Anything else? Nope! We may hear more during Meta Connect, which is happening in a few months.

Britons who have worn VR headsets think they look uncool, according to a poll from YouGov.

  • Additionally, when Brits are asked if they would be proud or embarrassed to wear these headsets in public, 62% say they would be embarrassed – and just 15% say they would be proud.

  • Any caveats? Bear in mind that the poll used 500 people, where there have been larger numbers in the past I believe. Still, the importance of aesthetics is telling here.
