Main Story
Let's talk about how I am tired of people asking if VR is dead. Slow news week, so I'm going to whip out my gears and start grinding. The topic appears every few months or so, repeatedly coming back as often as lockdowns in the UK. The content itself is well-trodden, drawing links to a potential iPhone moment and whether it is languishing in hype. It's a tired area, and slightly misleading; a few years ago I wrote about why comparing VR to iPhones
. Basically, they're too different to compare between one another for progress. So why do they keep coming back? One reason is the social traction. It's a guarenteed way to get reactions and comments, helping an article spread further. Some publications use tantalising headlines which don't have much bearing on the story itself. A recent example is WIRED, with an article titled '
.' Unfortunately, it doesn't cover the contents of the statement. The article explores how creators could abuse their power, but nothing about avoiding social change. But it's a banger of a headline that gets people's attention, right?Sometimes, reading articles about VR in mainstream publications is like absorbing processed and reprocessed facts that languish in the late 2010s. The solution is supplying a steady stream of trustworthy data to publications that back up the growth of the sector.
