The Big Story

The world of immersive is quiet this week. It feels like the silence before a likely storm of announcements and news, which will roll through Autumn and Winter before hitting Christmas like a ram. This always happens in August. As executives escape to their holidays, decisions on plans tend to be delayed until the first week of September. Well, except MelodyVR buying Napster out of nowhere. That surprised everyone. For these periods, I'd rather take a step back from analysis. But don't take the silence as lack of activity. A slew of announcements will be coming very, very soon. And when they come, the analysis will follow.

Other Stories

Got a news story? Let me know at [email protected].

  • Venice VR Expanded starts today, with the support of Viveport.

    • This year, there will be 25 interactive experiences on Viveport, and nine 360 films available on Viveport Video.Looks to be a great event!

    • Hideo Kojima will be a judge this year as well. Rumours suggest he is either hiding in a cardboard box, or slowly running across Italy with a bunch of headsets strapped to his back.

  • Interested in VR filmmaking?

    • Birmingham Young Filmmakers Network is running an event on the basics of immersive; check out more detailshere.

  • ASOS is dablling with TikTok AR filters for their latest campaign.

    • Byte Londoncreated an interactive mobile AR effect for ASOS’s global #AySauce TikTok campaign.

    • The AR itself is simple, though the use of TikTok is smart and (likely) effective. Have a peek at the video and judge for yourself.

  • Want to play something spooky?

    • Fast Travel Games' Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife is coming to Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift/S, HTC Vive, Valve Index, and PSVR headsets in early 2021. Check out the trailer.

    • Erik Odeldahl, Creative Director at Fast Travel Games, told me: "Even though you will play AS one of the restless dead in Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife, with supernatural powers at your disposal, expect to be very scared... there are far more sinister things inside the Barclay Mansion than you!"

    • Fun fact: I cannot deal with any sort of horror. I watched IT and curled into the fetal position at the slightest creeps.

  • More military figures using immersive tech...

    • BISimannounced that the U.S. Marine Corps will be using its software in its DVTE program. It is a laptop PC-based simulation system capable of emulating Marine Corps Infantry Battalion weapons systems and training scenarios.

  • Interested in Open AR Cloud?

  • A lot of cool stuff is happening with spatial audio and guitars.

    • GASP is Guitars with Ambisonic Spatial Performance. It can help with live performances as an immersive instrument. Pretty neat.

  • A couple of AltspaceVR events to consider:

  • Happen to be in China and want to see the V&A Museum?

    • Me neither, but: the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) launched its official account onKuaishou on August 25th.

    • I find it fascinating how virtual recreations of locations are brought to different countries; definitely a market ready for growth.

  • VR is coming to the world's biggest fashion event.

    • Circular Fashion Summit, by lablaco,is helping to make the first-ever virtual reality summit in fashion during Paris Fashion Week.

  • Immersive tech and BIM remains a strong market.

    • For example, Igloo Vision and VRcollab are collaborating to make a cool case study. They take 3D data from BIM projects to create a VR model in the cloud, accessible from anywhere in the world.Very cool, and we should expect more projects like these in the future.

  • Finally, the Immersive Wire is looking for a sponsor from next week.
