Meta continues its exclusivity strategy

The Immersive Wire - 6 May 2024 (Monday Briefing)

Executive summary

Welcome to your weekly briefing on the metaverse and spatial computing. Here are your snippets to sound smarter in meetings this week:

The Kendrick and Drake drama is entertaining, but it melts away as soon as I touch grass outside.

Analysis

Batman: Arkham Shadow is a Meta Quest exclusive.

  • What is the significance of this? The Arkham series is one of the more popular franchises on consoles, with a fervent fanbase who enjoy the original games from Rocksteady Games. Bringing the pedigree to the Meta Quest is a good way to bring more people to Meta’s headset.

  • How does it fit into Meta’s overall strategy? Meta’s exclusive approach mirrors Xbox and PlayStation console exclusives to (at least) get gamers on board. It may be working; some estimate that Meta has moved 1m+ devices since its launch so far.

  • When will we hear more? Summer Games Fest on 7 June, just a month away.
