England is going a bit loopy about football. Meanwhile, I am getting loopy about invoices.
defended its stance on ads on Oculus Quest headsets.
Firstly, it feels like a farmer defending his right to sell milk. We expected Facebook to introduce ads to VR at some point - it was only a matter of when and how.
Secondly, Facebook's overall messaging is positive in nature. In order to create a self-sustaining ecosystem for VR content, it makes sense for developers to have access to additional avenues of revenue. Most VR games do not make a lot of money, and act as a passion project for their teams. While Facebook takes a cut, of course.
Users are annoyed and voiced their dissatisfaction by review-bombing gaming titles. This makes me feel very uncomfortable, as developers work very hard - to have it negatively impact them based on the actions of another company feels crass. On the other hand, users say it is one of the few ways in which they can voice their dissatisfaction - and in this case, it succeeded. My hope is that Facebook can cultivate ways where it can listen to its customers without having partner studios in the firing line.
My stance is that it is too early to tell what will happen. We're seeing the slow but substantial update in VR which may bring along new media habits, such as people hanging about in social spaces. We can certainly expect private rooms of shadowed people huddled around virtual tables, perhaps in an encrypted space. But for friends who want to hang, there is a place for ads to deliver contextually relevant information.
My hope is that users have as much control of their data as possible, so they can stipulate their virtual world on their own terms.
