Recently I spoke to Carole Baskin about VR/AR and how the technology can save wild cats. She was lovely.

 

  • Yes, I understand why people might be hyped about a 'portable' VR machine. Having the ability to access the Steam store on a portable headset is tantalising, as it opens the doors even further for some new immersive experiences. But we don't know enough to be excited.

  • Firstly, we don't actually know how good the device is in practice. We've seen some controlled playtests on select games, but we have no idea how it'll run with VR experiences.

  • Even then, we know some specs - and we are not talking about high-end PC. This will be a nimble machine that can run some games well at 720p, but not enough to run high-fidelity games at 70fps.

  • So at best, we have a device that can run VR games in theory, but in practice may only run the simplest games. That's like releasing a mobile phone that 'could' run Red Dead Redemption 2, then finding that it can't even render the horse's legs properly.

  • My worry is that people are swept by the headlines again, and expect the world from Valve's dinky little device. Stay sharp, and wait for the tests later this year before buying.
