Not a stretch to say that Arcane is the best video game adaptation I have seen. I don't even play League of Legends, and even I appreciate the worldbuilding.
MAIN STORYThe power of narrative and the metaverse
Stories have an exceedingly strong pulling factor that can pull people to make decisions
. Humans are exceedingly good at weaving a narrative and placing ourselves in our own journey, a fictionalised path where we plot out the beats with more nuance and care than we would have ever given in the heat of the deciding moments. But told well, and they can rally people together to fight for a cause, or unify people under a particular agenda. Or in this case, cause a shed-load of money to pump into an idea decades in the making.
I mention this because it links to the metaverse
. Consider this: Neal Stephenson coined the term in 1992's
, and set it in a dystopian setting. That narrative has persisted for decades later, as a framing of the story that has gripped the media, professionals, and pundits. One person's idea has led to a domino effect where multi-national companies are punting billions into the churning furnace of innovation. A good story has persistent power.
Such a narrative has both bright and dark sparks
. Bright in that it can bring people together, open new ways to do business, and unlock potentially astonishing ways to improve our lives. But under the bright flickers come the tinges of issues, touching on expanded isolation and echo champers in a growing version of the 'net.
The story is not finished yet, but it is one that brings in new fans all the time, At an event on Thursday, I spoke to a number of people who are developing worlds in Roblox, and the incredible projects they are working on. I felt inspired, seeing the passion of the artists and developers come through; the tinkerers who are tweaking and editing their personal spaces, then banging open the doors for anyone to enter.
I am not a believer in the Great Person theory of history
; humanity-defining moments come from a nigh-infinite array of factors beyond the influence of reach of individuals. The same goes for Snow Crash; if Mr Stephenson did not write it, another term linking to the homogeneous trend would have been adopted. But I do believe that a good story can spread like a virus, can it too can cause socioeconomic ripples to persist over time.
