By the time you read this, I will be in the Peak District having a lovely break.

Let’s talk about reality-based platforms. I’m seeing a new trend where the new product announcements are moving from constructed virtual worlds, to importing real-life locations. So it is less about sitting in a meeting room designed for virtual conferencing, and more about sitting in a piazza in Rome while talking over work matters. There are pros and cons to both; I personally would much rather sit in a café and talk shop, but it’s certainly more distracting to work in. But the concept has wide applications across collaboration, property, and retail verticals. I started thinking about this because Varjo announced Reality Cloud. Headset users can scan their environment, then transport other users virtuall

Cool idea, right? Though expensive, too; it currently only works with their XR-3 headset, which sells for over $5,000. But in concept, it’s a wonderful way for users to import scans of their own homes or areas and share them with their (incredibly affluent) friends. For businesses, it provides an incredibly immersive way to show a property and its details, live and with other collaborators. All of this links to Varjo’s vision of the metaverse. I say their vision, because nearly every single company has their own version of the concept with no consensus on what it means. It’s like lots of different chocolate brands saying that they are the one true type of chocolate – they’re all the same, just different flavours of the same concept. But for Varjo, they want to introduce one which is grounded in reality, creating a twin of reality that people can take a look at. I really like this vision, and there is a place for it. I wouldn’t call it a metaverse necessarily; more a helpful tool for businesses to use, to help collaborate better or share spaces more clearly. It won’t be a lived-in reality, just a useful way to convey information.

Q&A with...

Cecilia Lascialfari, Creative Strategist and Technologist.

What are you working on, and what’s a key learning that you’ve had from it?My goal is to find a technology that allows me to continue to evolve the creative energy that is in me. I understood that in this historical moment, of great technological power, there is a need for the creativity of artists who, in the same team of programmers, can give life to something that has not yet been invented. I am not an engineer but I love working together with constructive minds.I created the ARea6DoF.com site in 2020 to show new technologies to those who do not know them, probably first to myself than to others. I take care of organizing the AWE Nite Florence from January 2021 to show the work of Italian and foreign companies in the field of new technologies. But the need to produce and synthesize my thinking through art and technologies will explode again, into something wonderful and new. I enter the world of technology asking for "permission/authorization" and with a lot of "shyness", "respect" and "admiration" for those who have been working there for years, accompanied by "inexhaustible enthusiasm". If you had to give one piece of advice, what would you give? I would like someone to advise me and offer me technologies to test on which I can apply my creativity. But if I really had to say something to someone, I would like to say it to all the people involved in art. I would like to ask them to take a qualitative leap and broaden their vision of the world, using new materials and new tools, trying to imagine what they could do by combining technology with their ideas and I would like to teach this to the students of the Academy of Fine Arts. The artist is a “unique person”. He doesn't have to stay tied to the instrument; he must harness the power of his way of seeing so different from all the other people around him to create something new. He must not be afraid to climb a little higher step or even to go outside the box. Creatives serve the world as much as engineers, programmers, doctors serve… I believe that this historical era gives a great possibility of re-evaluation to all ingenious, enthusiastic, artistic minds.I consider myself a “lover of beauty'' (which does not mean pursuit of perfection) who is trying to apply her creativity to new technologies, new media, and experimenting with new tools and methods. I’m open to all the possibilities that may come. At this moment I’m observing everything in search of a solution for myself. I would like to be able to convey this adrenaline-fueled vision and passion to those who cannot see beyond. And maybe... even the engineers! (Which I love!) If you want to know more about Cecilia Lascialfari, click here.
