TOP STORIESMagic Leap into a mountain of cash
Magic Leap raised $500m and teased their specs in a CNBC interview.
The stack of cash will go towards releasing the second generation of their Magic Leap headsets in 2022. The new headset will be lighter with a wider FOV and dimming options, and goes for a more sleek aesthetic.
This comes back off the major layoffs in 2020. Remember that in May last year, Magic Leap had a huge round of layoffs as it focused more on enterprise, and the new product is an evolution of that new focus.
So far, Magic Leap has raised $3.5bn in total funding over its lifetime - a far cry from its rumoured $10bn evaluation last year.
How successful will it be? I will reserve judgement until the new headset enters the market, but the CNBC interview makes clear their business trajectory. The next step is to see how well they fulfil their goals.

What is most remarkable about this is a name as big as Canon entering the hardware space with its own offering. It's a growing market opportunity and deployed their own products to tap into it.
