The Immersive Wire - 12 June 2023 (Monday Briefing)

Executive summary

Welcome to your weekly briefing on the metaverse. Here are your snippets to sound smarter in meetings this week:

  • Headline: The strategy for the Apple Vision Pro is up for debate (analysis below).

  • Awards: The deadline for submissions for the VR Awards is 19 June.

    • Disclaimer: I am a judge.

  • Conversation-starter: Apple acquired Mira, who made AR headsets for Super Nintendo World.

  • Other stories: Bait! has an update where you can fish for treasure, UploadVR is hosting its showcase on 14 June, and Hexa announced a new initiative with Amazon (more stories below).

Getting baked in the UK sun at the moment. Also, I will be judging the VR Awards again later this year.

Analysis

Apple Vision Pro has a few threads of potential strategies.

  • In short, my own analysis points to the sizable customer lifetime value of purchasers. Yes, the Vision Pro is expensive. But Apple’s strategy is more focused on monetising a higher-income audience, not bringing in a wave of new people.

  • My worry is that developers would not be able to compete with Apple’s package of services, such as fitness if it decides to unveil it for the headset. One example is wellness, as it may be an uphill battle if Apple announces a mindfulness integration with its Watch series.
