A survey on harassment in social VR

The Immersive Wire - 11 March 2024 (Monday Briefing)

Executive summary

Welcome to your weekly briefing on the metaverse and spatial computing. Here are your snippets to sound smarter in meetings this week:

  • Headline: Metaverses could be a hub for distributing illegal content, according to the UK (analysis below).

  • Based in the UK? Help investigate safe spaces in social VR by completing this quick survey (it only takes 30 seconds and it’s for a good cause!)

  • Out of the uncanny valley? Apple improved personas in its newest Vision Pro update.

  • Candidates board: Candidates are available to hire across a range of disciplines.

  • Other stories: American Metaverse Awards unveiled the nominees list and Walmart added AR try-on features in its store (more stories below).

Shogun is excellent. It’s a fish out of water story, only it’s a Brit stuck in 1600s Japan.

Analysis

Metaverses could be a hub for distributing illegal content, according to the UK.

  • According to CoinTelegraph, the researchers concluded that there are metaverse-specific IP issues, such as IP governance in an interoperable environment and regulating technologies like the blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) within virtual worlds.

  • This is an overview, but one to keep in reserve as we look into how it can spread to different countries.

Based in the UK? Help investigate safe spaces in social VR by filling in this quick survey (it only takes 30 seconds and it’s for a good cause!)

  • What is this? The purpose of the study is to find the rate of people who are harassed in social VR, a statistic which is difficult to find in the UK. Harassment in virtual spaces has a deep range of qualitative studies, investigating how people feel when they are impacted. The lack of quantitative insights warrants a deeper dive into the actual rate of harm in virtual worlds.

  • Even if you have not been harassed, consider filling in the form. It helps to ensure we have as much data as possible to look into what’s going on.
