I am publishing a new book! The Metaverse: A Professional Guide is out 2 February.

MAIN STORYRegulators and the metaverse

Meta will talk to a UK regulator to explore whether their VR headsets are

  • According to the Beeb, The Information Commissioners' Office is to talk to Meta about how its VR business complies with the regulator's "children's code".

  • One to watch closely. Any sort of regulatory movements will be critical as the company continues to expand their services.

We are early in 2022, and already seeing signs of what metaverse development will be like in 2022.

  • My favorite flop was pointed out by PROTOCOL's newsletter, where a single tent in a car park was Metaverse City. Amazing.

  • Looking behind it all, we should see more movements from Meta who will continue their metaverse exploration. Horizon will feature, for example, but I am curious about an update from Project Aria as well - even if it likely won't release in 2022.

  • Apple won't, as they shot down the idea of the metaverse. I imagine they want their marble-white walls as high as possible to lavish their users in luxury and preserve their premier user experience.

  • Keep an eye on the chipmakers too; Intel and Qualcomm will continue to invest into it, and we will see companies like RP1 pick up more steam.

  • I expect to see Amazon and Microsoft, both venerable cloud vendors, to look more into how cloud infrastructure can support the metaverse. I suspect they would need a major customer to need the capabilities, and the vendors will develop their own custom proposition. This may happen in 2022, though it is more likely a long-term development that is expanded over the next few years.

Let's see what happens next with the metaverse, but football may be a while yet.

The Metaverse: A Professional Guide sorts the sense from the nonsense, giving experts insights and guidance on how to navigate the burgeoning world of immersive technologies. By the end, you will have a firm grasp of the metaverse and all the contingent technologies that link to its foundations.Out 2 February. Keep an eye on this newsletter for exclusive peeks and updates.
