(It is bold for a company to suggest a ‘standard’ definition, so I am unsure if this will be more widely adopted. If it does, I will eat a Ghost Pepper sometime).

Not been the best week personally, but The Last of Us has been a highlight. Some point towards the inherent strength of the original game’s narrative transferring to the show. I agree, but it’s also supported by incredibly strong writing (see episode 3) and excellent acting from the ensamble. Not one to miss.
Analysis
Meta implies that the metaverse is predominantly VR, according to its work lobbying in Europe.
Basically, Meta argued that the development of the metaverse will not require telco companies to grow capital spending, as it will be predominantly accessible via VR devices. The argument falls on network fee proposals, which Meta argues against in a blog post. “Meta is investing to build a more reliable and efficient internet, it says. “We welcome working with telecom operators to achieve this goal – but this must be based on evidence.”
Does that mean the metaverse is VR? Not quite. We know that the metaverse is being accessed via laptops and phones, depending on your platform of choice. And even I don’t think VR will be the main way people will access the next iteration of the internet.
I believe the headline is being extrapolated in the wrong direction. Rather than saying that the metaverse is just VR, Meta is focusing on how it is being used today. Currently, the company is focusing on the VR side within the view of telco companies acting today to implement a network fee. Meta meanwhile focuses on the long-term view that VR devices are not required to access the metaverse, and other future devices not needing it either. We may see a shift as the input devices change.
