MetaMask founder sues Consensys

The Immersive Wire - 7 August 2023 (Monday Briefing)

Executive summary

Welcome to your weekly briefing on the metaverse. Here are your snippets to sound smarter in meetings this week:

  • Headline: MetaMask founder sues Consensys (analysis below).

  • Stat of the week: 40% of Spanish students are interested in using the metaverse for education, according to BBVA.

  • Conversation-starter: Horizon Worlds launched a new shooter game which is apparently very good.

  • Poll: 66% of readers are not ok with museum items becoming NFTs (new poll below).

Diably IV was delightfully dark, thought it felt somewhat repeptitive. Much enjoying Children of Ruin as my bedtime read in the meantime.

Analysis

MetaMask founder sues Consensys to recognize his role as a founding member of the company.

  • Joel Dietz said: “I’m confident that the case will show the substantial evidence that proves my role as a founding partner of MetaMask, and I know several colleagues in our community will verify that."

  • Why am I profiling this? First, 20m people use Metamask globally - nothing to sniff at. Second, Metamask is a significant player in the web3 space when it comes to identity and ownership, so any plays on the ownership of Metamask itself have important waves.

Are you ok with museum collections becoming NFTs?

Last week, 66% of you said no. Robin White of MediaCombo said: “How much additional income will these sales really bring to the museum? Who is the intended audience for these - is the museum seriously hoping to attract a large number of Gen Z people and lure them to become visitors/members?” Meanwhile, Michael Souter of Sama said: “It should be seen as a certificate of charitable donation and should definitely have a high transaction tax that goes back to the institution to fund allowing real-world viewing and educational material of said item.”

How've you found the first half of 2023?
