Let's talk about the construction of new operating systems for glasses. When it comes to new hardware, there needs to be a framework of solid software that can work with the systems. All of this comes with a solid operating system. It's a bit like baking a cake; you need a solid biscuit base, or the rest of it would wobble and collapse in on itself. So what is Facebook's approach?
both Zuckerberg and Bosworth confirmed they are working on a new OS. The new system will be built on preexisting systems, while also optimised to lower the thermal envelope. The main focuses are efficiency and safety, so that software can run on people's frames without overheating their faces. Quote: "These new platforms are so different from everything that’s come before it – not just the input, but the app model, how you’re going to discover things, how tightly they need to be optimized. If you’re building a pair of glasses that need to look like normal glasses, you need to have the system be so tightly optimized so you can basically do all the computation that you would expect from a modern computer, but do it on someone’s face within a thermal envelope and a power envelope that can last all day long. So that’s a very big challenge."And for Apple? Who knows. Rumours circulate that they are working on something called
, likely labelled as reality OS. But at best it's an internal codename, and at worst it's a sensible guess by a pundit. But the goals will likely be similar to Facebook; an efficient system that can run programs without overheating. It is difficult to comment further without any further details from both companies. But what's certain is that building an OS sets the framework for future innovations with AR glasses. And as Microsoft has shown, and slip-ups with OS can have long-lasting ramifications - which might not be a pleasant Vista to observe.

It might take a few years, but it will get there.

Q&A with...

Mathieu Gayet, Editor-In-Chief of XRMust.com
What is your background?I come from the cinema industry; I started on sets and moved to production. It’s a great thing to work with filmmakers in France! But I always kept an eye on new media and the Internet, and in 2011 I jumped on a great opportunity to become a marketing consultant (social media especially, also writing for a few French cinema blogs) to work with more people from cinema and television, and I dedicated myself to help spread good words about storytelling and technology – starting around 2015. What are you working on, and what’s a key learning that you’ve had from it? In 2018, I met with Fabio Hofnik from Brazil, and we were quite frustrated to lost tracks on XR experiences after every big event. So, we started to build an online database, which took a few iterations in the last 2 years. Six months ago, we launched officially XRMust.com, an online magazine about XR storytelling, and also a complete database of the XR industry, experiences, people, companies, and events. Now we need to develop it! This project is a great opportunity to link everything in the XR field, but we’re taking it step by step. In fact, we are confident that the creative XR industry is still a small community, but a strong one – we have a lot of great feedback, which shows us everyone wants to move at once in the same direction. It’s great to be in such a positive environment! If you had to give one piece of advice, what would you give? One thing we didn’t expect is to present the XR industry to the next-generation creators. For our next versions, we will be focused to discuss storytelling and technology subjects with students, young folks, first-time XR users. There is a lot to learn, and XR is the right area where no one is certain of anything. We’re all pioneers.
