Steve Bambury – Pioneer of Immersive Reality

Steve Bambury has been exploring the role of virtual reality in education since 2014 and in 2017, he launched VirtualiTeach, a not-for-profit website to share best practice in the use of VR and AR in education. The site has quickly developed a stellar reputation for accessing content related to immersive technologies in the classroom. Steve shares examples of projects he has coordinated at the schools he works across in Dubai, broader ideas for harnessing VR in the classroom and even theoretical pieces exploring the role of virtual reality in education.

In parallel to this, Steve launched the #CPDinVR events in June 2017, becoming the first educator in the world to ever host professional development sessions INSIDE virtual reality. These groundbreaking sessions which Steve coordinates and hosts in his spare time are free to attend and have seen audience numbers swell significantly since the launch last June with up to 50 simultaneous users now joining sessions. #CPDinVR events have included direct presentations from Steve (often encore performances of sessions he has delivered in Dubai – allowing a global audience to enjoy the content) and panel discussions which have featured educators from the UK, USA, India and more as well as industry experts such as Alvin Wang Graylin (HTC Vive), Sean Gilroy (BBC), Bob Fine (The VR Voice) and Dominic Eskofier (NVIDIA.)

Steve’s virtual reality projects in schools have led to him becoming recognised as one of the world’s leading voices in VR education. In 2017 he was the only person from the UAE and the only educator worldwide to be included on the Top 100 VR Influencers list (www.onalytica.com/blog/posts/virtual-reality-2017-top-100-influencers-brands-publications) alongside the likes of Palmer Luckey (creator of the Oculus Rift) and Clay Bavor (VP of Google). His model of the Depths of Virtual has been shared hundreds of times and even been adopted by universities as a part of studies of VR. Other theoretical pieces that he has produced such as “Why VR – 8 Reasons Virtual Reality Will Transform Education” have also been incredibly well received by the global education community. In January 2018, Steve worked with acclaimed educator Mark “ICTEvangelist” Anderson to produce The Periodic Table of VR and AR apps which has been shared over 1000 times on social media and has been used in schools across the world.
Steve’s has shared this knowledge beyond the school at events across the region including GITEX, BETT MEA, GESS Dubai, Education Experts, EDUtech DXB, EDEX MENA and more. In February 2018 he even travelled to Florida to share his work with VR in front of a global audience of educators at the Nearpod Summit. He has contributed articles to Education Journal Middle East and provided commentary on VR in education for the Khaleej Times, the Gulf News and the Everything AR/VR Podcast. In less than a year, Steve has also written close to 100 articles on his website VirtualiTeach – more content on the theme of VR in education than any other educator worldwide. All of this content is shared freely and produced by Steve in his spare time.
