Maxwell Mallia-Parfitt – Pioneer of Immersive Reality

Dr Max Mallia-Parfitt is Director of Applied Technologies at Fulcro Group. With experience in Computer Science, Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities as well as Robotics, Max moved to the construction sector 5 years ago to develop turnkey visualisation solutions. Working directly with major infrastructure projects and academic institutions, Max’s skills enable Fulcro to develop fully integrated BIM workflow solutions that link ‘Siloed Data’, enabling project integration with visualisations.
Max helped develop and launch the world’s first ‘BIM CAVE’ designed for use in the Construction Sector, the FULmax CUBE (http://www.fulmax.co.uk) and works with clients and building owners to understand their digital models through life-size immersive visualisation, to help teams collaborate across the globe. Max’s work on fully immersive VR systems won the prestigious CIOB Innovation & Research Award in 2014. Recent collaboration with Microsoft Research around the Microsoft HoloLens and their new Mixed Reality platform has pushed forward the use of Holographic technology in the AEC sector. Max joined Fulcro to develop next generation technology and software specifically for BIM workflows and understanding of complex datasets found within construction projects, from small housing projects to multi-billion-pound infrastructure projects.

Many of the ‘BIM CAVE’ designs have come from the gaming and entertainment industries, but the technology we’ve built into our FULmax CUBE has been specifically developed for the construction industry, for example our FULmax CUBE has roof projection which allows you look upwards as you would in the real world. The FULmax CUBE makes working in a team easy as everyone can see the data at life-size, rather than being stuck inside a VR headset by themselves.
